Yup. all trucks in CA are automatically considered commercial vehicles and given a corresponding plate, unless re-registered through the DMV as a personal vehicle. this is nothing new though, and it's always been hard to get a camper shell approved, as well as as risk to do so. DMV personnel at the counter didn't really know about this. They had to ask a supervisor. You would need the form #343 application of title and form #256A. The DMV will then inspect your vehicle. The inspector guys are usually lenient and will sign off on the camper shell regardless of how it's attached (clamps, etc).
